Caracas - Venezuelan authorities Wednesday announced the arrest of another person in an attempt to smuggle 1.3 tons of cocaine on an Air France jet to Paris.
The latest arrest raised to 23 the number of people in custody in Venezuela. Five others were arrested in Paris after the bust, the largest cocaine seizure ever on French soil.
“We now have 23 people in custody: eight National Guard officials and the rest Air France and airport workers,” Attorney General Luisa Ortega Diaz said.
Ortega gave no details on the latest person to be arrested, but disclosed that one of those under arrest was the wife of an official.
The case was a major embarrassment for the National Guard which is in charge of security at the Maiquetia Airport, where the Air France flight originated.
French authorities disclosed the bust on September 21, ten days after the drugs arrived in 30 suitcases that no-one came forward to claim.
The cocaine has an estimated street value of 200 million euros ($270 million).
