At least nine people were reported killed on Friday in violence in the city of Makhachkala, capital of the Russian autonomous republic of Dagestan.

Six suspected Islamist extremists were shot dead by government troops in a raid on an apartment building in the city, Russia's national anti-terrorism committee was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying.

Earlier, three people were killed in a car bombing in the city. Investigators believe Islamist extremists to be behind the attack. - Sapa-dpa
