New Delhi - At least nine passengers were killed and more than 30 injured when several compartments of a train derailed Sunday in western India, a railway official said. Four compartments and the engine of the passenger train derailed just outside a tunnel about 160
kilometres south-east of Mumbai on the scenic Konkan railway route that hugs India's western coastline. Rescue operations were still on, Central Railways spokesman AK Jain said. The injured had been shifted to hospitals nearby. A high-level enquiry had been ordered and it would be overseen by the railways safety board, Jain said. India's railways, which carry an estimated 20 million passengers daily, have a poor safety record with several accidents reported every year. - Sapa-dpa
