Female students have been barred from wearing jeans and T-shirts at a college in northern India, sparking an uproar over the “diktat,” officials and news reports said on Monday.
Adarsh Women's College in Bhiwani district of Haryana state recently fined four students 100 rupees (about 2 dollars) each for flouting the dress code, the Times of India daily reported.
“Western clothes such as jeans and short tops attract men and a reason why students have to face Eve-teasing,” principal Alaka Sharma told reporters. Sexual harassment or taunting is known as Eve-teasing in India.
“Girls have to come in the traditional Indian dress like the salwar kameez,” she said.
Students criticised the dress code, according the media and National Commission for Women.
“Such diktats are uncalled for and bizarre. The government must take action against the college administration,” National Commission for Women chairwoman Mamata Sharma told broadcaster NDTV. - Sapa-dpa
