London - Michelle Obama has said that her husband was a ‘bum’ in his youth and didn’t get his act together until he was at college. The First Lady said that the US President ‘fooled around’ a lot and ‘barely got his work done’.
She added that he began to focus when he transferred from Occidental College in California to Columbia University in New York where he began to get interested in politics.
Mr Obama has detailed how, with a group of friends known as the ‘Choom Gang’, he used to drive to the beach in Hawaii where they would smoke marijuana whilst listening to music.
Mr Obama, who was known as Barry to his friends, was known for intercepting joints as they were passed around a circle so he could take an extra hit.
In a talk show interview Mrs Obama said: ‘Barack fooled around in high school. He didn’t take school seriously in high school… He was a bum!’
She added that this was why he talks about such issues and that it was ‘never too late’ to turn your life around.
