London - A man and woman have been jailed for using Twitter to abuse a prominent feminist.

The two were sentenced Friday for sending vulgar messages to activist Caroline Criado-Perez.

Isabella Sorley, 23, received 12 weeks in prison and 25-year-old John Nimmo received an eight-week sentence.

They peppered Criado-Perez with the threatening messages after she led a successful campaign to have a female figure put on British currency.

Criado-Perez was one of several women who went public earlier last year to complain about sexually explicit abuse received on Twitter from online bullies and provocateurs, often nicknamed “trolls.”

Twitter responded in August by making it easier to report abuse.
