Enrique Pena Nieto, who has been confirmed as the winner of Mexico's presidential election after a recount, denied in an interview published Friday that his party was involved in vote-buying.
The centrist politician told the Spanish daily El Pais that he “categorically denied” such allegations, dismissing claims that his Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) was given an undue amount of television coverage.
“Saying that television put me here is lacking respect for millions of Mexican voters,” he said.
Pena Nieto pledged to cooperate with other parties for “structural reforms” aimed at creating jobs and a social security system covering all Mexicans.
Pena Nieto received more than 38 percent with 99 percent of votes counted. Centre-left candidate Andres Lopez Obrador took 31
percent.
The result was confirmed by a recount of about half of the votes. Lopez Obrador had questioned the election results and called for a full recount. - Sapa-dpa
