Berlin -

A 19-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of burning to death a heavily pregnant woman, who was later found in woodland in Berlin, a police spokeswoman confirmed on Saturday.

The suspect was arrested a few hours after the body was found on Friday and questioned on the same day, she said.

The man is believed to have set the 19-year-old woman on fire, burning her alive, in woods in the Berlin district of Adlershof late Thursday.

Charges were expected to be brought against him on Saturday, the spokeswoman said.

It was not immediately clear what the relationship between the man and the woman was, the police said, adding they could not give any further details as enquiries were ongoing.

Walkers had found the body at 7.45am (06.45 GMT) on Friday near a woodland path as their dog started barking and acting strangely.

A cordon had been set up around the crime scene as forensic scientists carried out their investigations. - Sapa-dpa
