Hanoi -

Police in central Vietnam have launched an investigation into the killing of two endangered monkeys after photos of a group of men torturing the animals were posted online, local media reported on Thursday.

The images, posted on the social networking website Facebook on Monday, show the men putting a cigarette into the mouth of one pregnant monkey and then boiling her alive. They were uploaded by a user in Quang Nam province.

The Forest Protection Department and the Ranger Department in the province are working with local police to track down the men in photos, newspaper Dan Tri reported.

The images sparked outrage from internet users, with thousands of comments, many of which called for immediate police action.

Conservationists from Hanoi have identified the animals as grey-shanked douc langurs (Pygathrix cinerea), a species listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Vietnam has put the monkeys on its own endangered list and made it illegal to hunt them. - Sapa-dpa
