A 33-year-old wheelchair-bound man was on trial on Tuesday in Beijing, charged with deliberately causing an explosion at the capital's main airport.
Ji Zhongxing denied deliberately causing the explosion on July 20 in an arrivals terminal at the airport, but he told the court the explosion occurred because of his “negligence”, the semi-official China News Service said.
Ji said he was forced to use the wheelchair because of injuries he suffered in a beating by security guards in his home province of Shandong.
He was seriously injured in the explosion and police wheeled him into court on a stretcher on Tuesday, as scores of police, journalists and onlookers gathered outside in the rain.
Earlier reports said airport staff had prevented Ji from distributing fliers about his grievances shortly before the explosion.
A police officer also suffered minor injuries in the blast.
The former construction worker said he was protesting local authorities' failure to award him compensation for the injuries he suffered at the hands of the security guards.
Ji faces a sentence of up to 10 years in prison if he is found guilty of deliberately causing an explosion. - Sapa-dpa
