Islamabad - A Pakistani woman has given birth to five babies, her husband said on Thursday, after 16 years of childless marriage.

Four baby girls and a boy were born to the woman, who is in her 30s, at a hospital in the southern city of Karachi on Wednesday, her husband Zahir Khan said.

One baby girl died immediately after the birth, said gynaecologist Hina Taimur.

The mother and four remaining babies were in a stable condition, Taimur said.

The couple, from the south-western city of Quetta, got married 16 years ago but never had a baby despite wanting children, Khan said.

“I am extremely happy,” said Khan. “Few people would realise how it feels when someone becomes a father after remaining issueless for 16 years.”

The couple has been visiting doctors for many years for fertility treatment, Khan said.

It is the second time in less than a year that quintuplets have been born in Pakistan.
