Moscow - The leader of Russia's Communist Party has published a microblog entry insulting former US ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens and calling his death at the hands of a mob just desserts, Russian media reported on Wednesday.

“The American ambassador to Libya was shot down like the lowest dog. He was the main expert for the Libyan 'revolution'. What he reaped, he sowed,” wrote Russian Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov in a Monday post in the microblog Twitter.

The tweet was dictated personally by Zyuganov, said Communist Party spokesman Denis Parfyonov, in comments reported by the RIA Novosti news agency.

US embassy officials in Moscow were aware of the Zyuganov's tweet but were not likely to respond to it until presidential elections in the US are completed in November, the newspaper Kommersant reported.

Stevens died on September 11 when rioters assaulted the US consulate in the Libyan city Benghazi and set the building on fire. Three other US government workers also lost their lives.

Libyan authorities have blamed the attack on public anger over the US film The Innocence of Muslims. - Sapa-dpa
