Veracruz -Seven presumed members of the notorious Zeta drug cartel were killed overnight in a gunfight with the army in Veracruz state, scene of a surge in violence, a military source said Monday.
The feared Zetas's brush with the army patrol began late Sunday and continued into the wee hours Monday in the eastern town of Ursulo Galvan after soldiers tried to inspect two vehicles.
The cars' occupants “opened fire on the troops,” said the source who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The Zetas were created by elite anti-drug commandos who deserted and went to work for the Gulf cartel in the mid-1990s as hired guns. They later split to form their own cartel, sparking bloody turf wars as they set up their own trafficking operations.
More than 50,000 people have been killed since President Felipe Calderon launched a tough military crackdown on criminal groups in December 2006, most in battles between rival cartels. - Sapa-AFP
