Sex video inspires virginity testing plan

Jakarta - A district government in Indonesia's West Java province has dropped a controversial proposal to conduct virginity tests on female high school students after two teens were caught having sex on video, a local report said on Monday.

Students and parents railed against the proposal as harassment and a violation of human rights, The Jakarta Post reported.

"We can't accept this idea - it's unfair as the porno tape was just an isolated case," high school student Gita, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, was quoted as saying.

Irianto MS Syafiuddin, the regent of Indramayu district, proposed the virginity test last week after a three-minute video surfaced showing a 16-year-old female student and 17-year-old male student from a local public high school having sex.

It was unclear what punishment the female students would have faced if they were found not to be virgins, or whether any male students would be sanctioned for having sex. The minimum age for sexual intercourse for Indonesia females is 16 years old.

District residents complained that the regent should concentrate on important local issues such as poverty.

Indonesia is the world's largest Mulsim-majority nation but has a secular government and society. However, that has not stopped politicians from using social issues such as sex and religion to attempt to score political points and attract voters. - Sapa-DPA
