Sydney - A man has been seriously injured in a shark attack in Western Australia.

State police say the man was attacked on Thursday morning at Wylie Bay in the town of Esperance on Western Australia's remote southern coast.

The victim was being treated at a hospital.

Police said they had no other information immediately available.

It was the second attack in Esperance in a year.

Last October, a man was seriously injured by a suspected great white shark while diving off Esperance.

Sharks are common in Australian waters. But the country has averaged fewer than two fatal attacks per year in recent decades. - Sapa-AP
