Florence, Italy -

Amanda Knox's former Italian boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, was apprehended by Italian police overnight near the Austrian and Slovenian border, news reports said on Friday.

Officers caught him in the north-eastern village of Venzone, between the towns of Udine and Tarvisio, the ANSA news agency said.

He was not arrested. On Thursday, Sollecito was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the murder of British student Meredith Kercher. Knox, who is now living in the United States, was jailed for 28 years and a half.

The ruling is provisional, pending another appeal, so neither face immediate imprisonment.

The court, however, ordered the confiscation of his passport, to prevent him from fleeing the country.

Police said they were enforcing that decision when they apprehended Sollecito. - Sapa-dpa
