Madrid - Forty-four people went on trial in Spain on Thursday on charges of sending hundreds of thousands of euros of drug money to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
The key member of the accused, who faces up to 18 years in prison, told the court near Madrid that she sent sums of up to 100 000 euros weekly to Colombia over several years.
The Ecuadorian woman said she picked up the money in several places around Spain, but denied knowing from where it came or to whom it went.
“One should not ask so many questions, and they would not have told me,” said the woman, who took a commission on each money transfer.
Most of her suspected accomplices were Colombians or Ecuadorians.
Spain is one of the main gateways of Colombian cocaine into Europe.
The FARC have been fighting the Colombian state for half a century. The Colombian conflict, which has also involved other rebel groups, is believed to have killed more than 200 000 people. However, the FARC and the government are now involved in a peace process.
