Spanish police have arrested three people after finding cocaine in their luggage at Madrid's busiest airport.

Madrid - Police at Madrid’s Barajas Airport - Spain's busiest - seized just over 55kg of cocaine hidden in the luggage of three passengers who arrived on a flight from Lima, Peru, in one of the biggest seizures of the drug at the airport, police said on Wednesday.

The cocaine was found on Monday, bundled inside clothes in two checked bags belonging to two women and a man who were subsequently arrested, police said in a statement.

“This is one of the biggest ever seizures of this type carried out at Madrid's Barajas Airport,” the statement said.

Police singled out the three passengers, aged 28, 32 and 37, for questioning and searched their luggage after observing that they appeared to be nervous as they waited to clear passport control.

Police detained 398 people last year at Madrid's Barajas Airport for drug smuggling. Just over 45 million passengers passed through the airport last year.

Spain's close ties with its former colonies in Latin America, a major cocaine-producing region, have made the country a key transit point for South American drugs bound for Europe. - Sapa-AFP
