Madrid - A female provincial politician from Spain's ruling party, Isabel Carrasco, was shot dead in the street on Monday in the northern city of Leon, officials said.

Police said a woman had been detained over the shooting death of Carrasco, who was the head of the Leon provincial council.

“She has died. She was shot several times and she died,” a ruling Popular Party spokeswoman told AFP. She said she had no further details.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and other politicians from the ruling Popular Party and the opposition Socialist Party cancelled official engagements.

“Due to the death of Isabel Carrasco, president of the Popular Party for Leon and of the provincial government of Leon, expresses its deepest sorrow and announces the suspension of all acts planned for today,” the Popular Party said in a statement.
