Kabul - Afghan surgeons performed a “very sophisticated” operation to removed an extra head attached to three-month-old girl's scalp, a doctor said on Friday.
“Asri Gul, one of twin daughters, was admitted to Jalalabad city hospital for treatment,” said Ahmad Obaid Mojaddidi, a surgeon in Nangarhar provincial hospital.
“We found no way except an operation which threatened the life of the baby,” Mojaddidi told reporters.
He said the baby's extra head was twice as large as the main head.
“We guess that there was another baby in the mother's abdomen, but did not grow, so the head attached to the baby girl's scalp,” said Mojaddidi.
“The operation was carried out successfully and the baby is now in good health.”
Mojaddidi described the operation as one of the most sophisticated ever carried out in eastern Afghanistan without “modern medical equipment”.
He said the baby was discharged from the hospital on Thursday and her parents took her to their village in Chaprehar district. - Sapa-dpa
