New York - A Madrid-bound Delta Air Lines jetliner returned to New York on Thursday night after suspicious wires were found in a bathroom, but no explosives were discovered, sources familiar with the matter said.

Delta Flight 126, a Boeing 767-300 with 206 passengers aboard, landed safely at John F Kennedy airport shortly after 9.30pm EDT (01.30 GMT Friday), about 90 minutes after takeoff, according to the airline.

There were conflicting accounts of whether anyone was being held.

Delta described the situation as a “security concern” without elaborating. Out of an abundance of caution, the airline said in a statement, the plane returned to New York.

Passengers reported finding suspicious items, described by one law enforcement source as wires, in a bathroom during the flight.

Once back in New York, the aircraft was examined by bomb technicians and no explosives were found, according to a second law enforcement source. - Reuters
