The Syrian government is committing crimes against humanity by attacking towns with heavy weapons, UN human rights chief Navi Pillay said on Monday in Geneva.

The United Nations high commissioner for human rights also demanded that both government and rebel forces stop violating human rights.

“The government of Syria should immediately cease the use of heavy armaments and shelling of populated areas, as such actions amount to crimes against humanity and possible war crimes,” she said at the start of the UN Human Rights Council's summer session.

“The situation in Syria continues to deteriorate, and the suffering of civilians has increased significantly,” she said. - Sapa-dpa
