Taipei -

A Taiwanese student who stabbed to death four subway passengers last May was sentenced to death on Friday, state-run media reported.

The New Taipei District Court said that Cheng Chieh killed four passengers seated closest to him on a moving train on the Taipei Metro and went on to attack people in four carriages, injuring 22, according to the Central News Agency.

The 22-year-old was handed a death penalty for each of the four victims.

A brother of Lee Tsuei-yun, one of the four victims, told reporters outside the courtroom that the ruling “fits with expectations of the society.”

He said Cheng had remained defiant and showed no regret throughout the proceedings.

In Taiwan, it is mandatory for death penalty cases to be reviewed.
