Islamabad -
Police in north-western Pakistan arrested an Islamic school teacher and two others on charges of raping a teenage college girl, officials said on Wednesday.
Three men lured the victim through another female student on the pretext of dropping her home after school on Tuesday, said local police chief Zulfikar Jadoon.
They then raped the girl in the car, he said.
The chief suspect is a Qur’an teacher at a village Islamic school, Jadoon said.
A mob of angry people threw stones at a police vehicle when the suspects were brought to court on Wednesday morning.
Convictions in rape cases are rare in Pakistan because of what legal experts called complicated and outdated laws, stemming from Islamic sharia.
A victim is required to produce at least two “adult and pious” Muslim males to back charges under laws enacted in 1980s by military ruler General Ziaul Haq. Instead, victims are often charged with adultery if they fail to prove charges against rapists. - Sapa-dpa
