Moscow - A 15-year-old German schoolgirl of Moroccan descent stabbed a police officer in Hanover, four months after she was stopped from joining Islamists in Syria, German media reported Thursday.

The attack took place at the Hanover railway station last Friday, the Bild newspaper said. The teen was stopped for suspicious behavior and asked to show her ID.

She stabbed one of the two patrol officers in the throat with a knife, causing a deep wound that almost cost him his life, the outlet said.

Hanover prosecutors told Bild that the girl was a self-radicalized Islamist extremist who had been under surveillance since last November for planning to travel to Syria to fight alongside IS militants.

“We have formed an investigative team and are acting on suspicion of Islamist background,” the prosecution told the newspaper.

IS, a violent Islamist group designated as terrorist organization by the United Nations and outlawed in many countries including the United States and Russia, has thousands of Europeans fighting in its ranks.
