Vienna - Vienna police said on Saturday they received warnings from a “friendly” intelligence service that European capitals might come under shooting or bomb attacks before the New Year.
“In the lead-up to Christmas, a friendly intelligence service sent a warning to numerous European capitals saying potential bomb or gun attacks could take place in areas with large crowds between Christmas and New Year,” Vienna police said in a statement.
They said several possible names of potential attackers were mentioned, and investigation had so far yielded no concrete results. In response to the warning, they said security would be increased at public events and on roads in Vienna and elsewhere in Austria. The alert came after gunmen and suicide bombers killed 130 people in a series of terrorist attacks in Paris on Nov. 13.
