Thai officers probed for Rohingya trafficking

Comment on this story

Bangkok -

Officials say the Thai army has begun looking into security officials allegedly involved in the human trafficking ring that sent Myanmar's Rohingya ethnic minority to a third country via Thailand.

Major General Dittaporn Sasasmit said on Tuesday the army was investigating whether any army or government officials are part of the network that helped traffic the Rohingya to Malaysia.

More than 800 people from the beleaguered minority were found in Thailand's south earlier in January.

Army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha said on Monday that any soldiers found to be involved in human trafficking will be expelled and prosecuted.

Human rights groups have called on the Thai government not to repatriate the Rohingya to Myanmar, where they would face wide discrimination. - Sapa-AP
