Islamabad - US drone strikes killed 13 Islamist militants in a Pakistani tribal district, officials said on Tuesday.

The first unmanned aircraft fired two missiles at a compound in the Shawal area of North Waziristan, near the Afghan border, killing eight militants on Monday.

Most of the victims were believed to be members of an Islamist group of ethnic Uzbek militants, a military official said.

The compound was being used as a transit point to launch cross-border attacks on international forces in Afghanistan, an intelligence official said.

Another drone strike in the same area on Sunday killed five militants said to also be members of Uzbek group linked with al-Qaeda.

Insurgents controlled North Waziristan for nearly a decade, using the region for cross-border attacks.

They have been on the run since the Pakistani military launched an offensive in mid-June.

The army said it had killed more than 1 100 militants during the campaign, but such claims are difficult to verify independently because access to the region is restricted. - Sapa-dpa
