Hanoi -

At least nine people are dead and 30 injured after a bridge collapsed in northern Vietnam early on Monday, officials said.

Around 40 people were on their way to a burial at a cemetery in Lao Cai province, bordering China, when the suspension bridge they were crossing collapsed, said Hoang Hiep, deputy chairman of the National Committee for Traffic Safety.

Ten people are in critical condition.

The bridge was built a year ago, Hiep said. It had a capacity of only 1.5 tons and probably collapsed because of the high number of people crossing it, said district chairman Hoang Tho Trung.

Families of the deceased will receive seven million dong ($340) and families of those injured will receive two million dong, local newspapers reported. - Sapa-dpa
