London - Turkey on Thursday demanded the European Union make it a member so it can take Britain’s place after Brexit.

Officials in Ankara attempted to exploit the referendum by warning the EU that it needed to fill the gap or face decline.

During the referendum campaign, David Cameron had insisted Turkey was not on course to join until the year 3000.

But diplomats in Brussels on Thursday re-opened talks on Turkish membership.

As officials started the negotiations on budget contributions, Turkey’s EU minister argued that it was needed as a member more than ever because its vibrant economy and young population meant it would be an asset.

Omer Celik said: ‘Turkey is a major European power… Europe needs a fresh start and a fresh vision and will have to include Turkey. Whatever the picture will be after Brexit, Turkey’s position will be stronger.’
