Beijing - China's Ministry of Civil Affairs says a storm has killed 13 people in the country and thousands are in need of basic living supplies.
Typhoon Matmo dumped heavy rain on Taiwan before arriving on the Chinese mainland on Wednesday and being downgraded to a tropical storm. It brought strong winds and heavy downpours to several provinces.
The ministry said Sunday that nine deaths had been reported in eastern Jiangxi province and four in southern Guangdong province. It said nearly 290 000 residents had been relocated and about 37 000 were in urgent need of basic living supplies.
The bad weather associated with Typhoon Matmo in Taiwan is considered a likely factor in the crash on Wednesday of a plane on a small Taiwanese island that killed 48 people. - Sapa-AP
