A serial rapist in Britain told victims he was attacking them to teach them a lesson for walking home alone at night.
Adam Downworth learned Ninja combat techniques, which he employed to brutally subdue his five victims.
As he carried out his savage attacks, he used “hateful and degrading” language, telling one woman: “Look at my eyes. It’s all about teaching little b*****s like you that they can’t walk on the street on their own when there’s men like me about.”
During a 10-month reign of terror, Downworth, 32, drove around in a white van looking for women walking home alone after a night out.
The office cleaner, who had studied books on forensic science and psychological profiling to learn how to avoid leaving clues, dragged his final victim down a secluded path.
He raped her twice before telling her: “I’ll have to kill you now.” But she managed to escape and alert a passer-by. Downworth was spotted running away and was arrested near his van.
On Monday, he was jailed for life at Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester after being convicted of 13 sex offences including rape and attempted rape.
The judge ordered that he should serve a minimum of 23 years.
The court heard that Downworth, from Stockport, cruised streets in the area in his Citroen Berlingo looking for targets.
To avoid leaving fingerprints, he put on the blue latex gloves he used at work, then followed the victim on foot or hid waiting to pounce, using martial arts choking techniques.
One woman, who begged him to take her purse and phone but spare her, was told he was teaching her she could not walk at night on her own. He added: “It’s not about the money.”
Another victim feared she was going to die after she was viciously beaten and kicked in the head before being raped twice.
Alaric Bassano, prosecuting, said: “A striking feature of these attacks is the use of gratuitous violence against his victims, violence beyond that necessary to fulfil his sexual purpose and seemingly unleashed simply to increase the suffering of the women.
“He spoke in hateful and degrading ways whilst attacking them and appeared to be deriving sadistic pleasure from their suffering.”
Downworth first struck in December 2011. His victim, aged 28, was attacked at 2.50am on a bridge near a reservoir, choked until she lost consciousness, sexually assaulted and beaten about the face.
The last victim, aged 48, was grabbed from behind in September 2012, dragged by her hair down a path and raped twice before she managed to break free and raise the alarm.
Police, who found martial arts books with chapters on choking and strangling highlighted in pencil at his home, believe Downworth may have attacked other women who were too frightened to report it.
