Voices tell me to kill, says decapitation accusedComment on this story
A Bulgarian man accused of decapitating a grandmother as she shopped in Tenerife told a court on Monday he had no memory of the attack.
Homeless drug addict Deyan Deyanov, 29, denies the murder of Jennifer Mills-Westley, 60, in the resort of Los Cristianos in May 2011.
Mr Deyanov reportedly walked into a shop to ask for a large knife before launching the attack.
He told the court he is haunted by voices in his head which tell him how to act, claiming they told him he was “an angel of Jesus Christ who is going to create a new Jerusalem”. “They direct how I act. Sometimes they say kill, fight, hit, pray,” he said.
He admitted using crack cocaine and LSD before his arrest but had no memory of living in Tenerife.
Mr Deyanov has been diagnosed with acute paranoid schizophrenia and his defence is expected to argue that he was not criminally responsible for Ms Mills-Westley's death because of his mental condition.
