Dublin - Northern Ireland police say they have seized three guns, two grenades and other weapons in a raid on a home in Londonderry, the second-largest city in the British territory.

It wasn't immediately clear which paramilitary or criminal faction owned Friday's weapons cache. A 28-year-old man who lives at the address was arrested.

Several Irish Republican Army factions rooted in Londonderry's Catholic majority are particularly active in the city. But the raid occurred on the edge of The Fountain, the only British Protestant neighborhood in the city center. Drug-dealing gangs also are arming themselves more heavily to deter IRA attacks on their members.

Police say they also seized a CS gas canister, a stun gun, more than 1 000 pounds ($1 600) in cash and drugs worth 20 000 pounds ($32 000) during Friday's operation. - Sapa-AP
