Phnom Penh - A Cambodian woman has died after being doused with acid around two weeks ago, a charity worker and local media said Tuesday.

Yi Aun, 40, died from her injuries Monday after being attacked at home in the north-western province of Siem Reap on December 26.

“Approximately 50 per cent of her body had received third-degree burns,” said Ziad Samman, project manager at the Cambodian Acid Survivors Charity.

“In cases as severe as these it is not uncommon for the victim to succumb to their injuries,” he added.

The woman was hit in the face with the corrosive substance after opening her front door to two men, The Phnom Penh Post newspaper reported, citing police. Her 19-year-old son was also hit, but survived.

Two men have been charged with premeditated murder, Siem Reap's provincial Deputy Police Chief Mok Som On was quoted as saying.

Samman said the motive for the attack was not clear.

The acid attack was one of seven recorded in 2012 by the Cambodian Acid Survivors Charity, a drop from 14 in 2011 and 21 in 2010. - Sapa-dpa
