Authorities in the Mekong Delta fined a mother for stripping naked to protest confiscation of her land, reports said on Wednesday.

A district People's Committee in Can Tho province fined Pham Thi Lai 80 000 dong (2 dollars) for violating Vietnamese customs and traditions, state-run newspaper Thanh Nien reported.

Her family was also fined 1.5 million dong for obstructing authorities who were trying to clear the area.

The incident took place on May 22 when Lai and her daughter stripped naked in an attempt to stop a construction crew from starting work on a residential project. Security guards dragged the pair off the site.

Officials announced a plan to develop the area in 2002. Lai's family refused to accept the offered compensation package.

In December, Lai's husband drank pesticides in front of security guards at the site, online news site VN Express said. He survived.

“We felt we had no other choice but to do something as drastic as what we did, despite the sense of shame,” she was quoted as saying. - Sapa-dpa
