■ Building on the Quloobul Moe’mineen Masjiet in Goodwood Road started in 1932, and the first jumuah (Friday congregation prayers) was performed in 1935. The mosque was the first in the northern suburbs. Forced removals had a huge impact on the mosque. According to the history recorded for the mosque’s 75th celebration in 2004, poor Muslim residents from the Acres initially worshipped in a wood and iron structure. The Natha family escaped the forced removals and looked after the mosque for many years (“Goodwood mosque a symbol of spirituality,” Tygertalk, June 16, 2005. After the area was desegregated in 1994, many Muslim families returned and the mosque now serves a vibrant community.
