Northern News turns 20

■ This week marks the 30th anniversary of the unveiling of the Monument of the Fallen Soldier at the Goodwood civic centre in McDonald Street. It was unveiled on October 10, 1986 in memory of residents who died in the two World Wars and other conflicts. Ten years ago, our forerunner, Tygertalk, reported on the sorry state of the monument, which had fallen into ruin (“Monumental ‘skandvlek’,” Tygertalk, September 21, 2006). The monument has since been restored. This is a good time to look back and as Northern News turns 20, we’re looking back at some of the memorable moments we’ve experienced with our readers over the years. We’re also counting down the weeks to our souvenir edition, which will be published at the end of October. We’d like to hear from long-standing residents of the area covered by Northern News. Do you recall what the area was like 20 years ago? What has changed – and what hasn’t? We also invite schools and community organisations to share their stories and memories with us. And because we all love looking at pictures, now’s a great time to dig out your images of yesteryear and share them with us.
