Residents catch burglar

A Goodwood man and his neighbours caught a suspected burglar last week.

The Gertrude Street resident opened his garage door on Wednesday May 17, at about 6.30pm, and found the suspect inside.

The man had fled when confronted, said Goodwood SAPS spokesman Captain Waynne Theunis.

He had allegedly broken the lock on the garage door to get inside.

When the resident shouted for help, his neighbours joined the chase and helped him catch the suspect at the Goodwood Rugby Club.

The man, 32, was then handed over to the police.

Residents also came to the aid of a woman who was mugged in Dirkie Uys Street, Goodwood, on Friday May 19. Captain Theunis said two men had accosted the woman and one of them snatched her cellphone.

Alerted to the woman’s cries for help, residents chased the men.

“While the suspects were running, one of them dropped the cellphone in Hamilton Street. The community members apprehended one of the suspects and retrieved the cell phone,” said Captain Theunis.
