With the very sad murder of police Warrant Officer Petrus Holz on the N2 yesterday morning, one wonders how many more innocent lives will be lost on that stretch of road before something is done to obviate these senseless atrocities.

Many years ago I happened to be jogging alongside the M3 when I was stopped by a police officer who told me that it was an offence for pedestrians to be walking or jogging on a motorway.

This is very much the case in England and in Europe, and pedestrians are never seen on these freeways. I am not sure whether that prohibition still applies in South Africa, but if it does, why is it not enforced? And if not, I would like to suggest that a law should be introduced whereby it would be an offence for pedestrians to be seen on the motorways.
