‘Bias’ in youth body short-list

Comment on this story

THE SA Youth Council has challenged the selection of candidates for the National Youth Development Agency board, saying it has been unfair.

An MP who sat on the parliamentary ad hoc selection committee has alleged that it favoured people sympathetic to President Jacob Zuma, in an apparent ploy to ensure he secures a second term at Mangaung.

The youth council has threatened to ask Public Protector Thuli Madonsela to intervene if its concerns are not addressed.

It has expressed its dissatisfaction in a letter to the Speaker of Parliament, Max Sisulu, and National Council of Provinces chairman Mninwa Mahlangu.

It has also asked members of the selection committee to declare their relationships with some of the seven selected candidates.

The recommended candidates are former SA Student Congress leader Xoliswa Bambiso; the deputy national chairman of the IFP Youth Brigade, Zandile Majozi; ANC Youth League members Muthupi Modiba, Kenny Morolong and Maropene Ntuli; and Young Communist League members Yershen Pillay and Nyalleng Potloana.

The committee’s recommendations were expected to be presented to the National Assembly today for approval.

Western Cape youth council chairman Thembinkosi Josopu said if any MPs had any relationship with any of the candidates selected, they should have recused themselves.

Cope MP Nqaba Bhanga, who sat on the interviewing panel, has said that youth council president Thulani Tshefuta and Abel Rangata from Limpopo excelled in the interviews, but were not recommended because they did not favour a second term for Zuma.
