NEWLY APPOINTED Tshwane metro police chief Steve Ngobeni has received the backing of executive mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa.

Ngobeni was unveiled as the new metro police chief at the council’s monthly meeting yesterday.

The public announcement and inauguration of Ngobeni was expected to take place this afternoon at the metro police headquarters, corner WF Nkomo Street (Church Street) and Es’kia Mphahlele Drive (DF Malan Drive), Pretoria West.

The event will also include the parade and posting of 70 new superintendents who were employed recently and have just completed a month-long supervisors’ course at the metro police academy.

Ramokgopa praised Ngobeni, saying he had managed to uplift himself.

“He started as a security officer and gave 17 years of his life to the metro police.

“He managed to obtain a degree and his achievements sent hope to a cleaner that he/she can also uplift him/herself.

“We will have a big parade tomorrow (today) and we need to show our support (for him),” he said.

Ramokgopa said Ngobeni was a simple and unassuming person who had not harboured any ambitions of occupying the position.

The mayoral committee member for community safety, Terence Mashego, said he was confident that Ngobeni would bring stability to the metro police.

“He has shown during his five months as acting chief that he can do the job. “We are aware that he will bring discipline to the force,” said Mashego.

DA councillor Derek Fleming praised Ngobeni, saying he had shown leadership qualities.

“I recently phoned him after an incident outside my home, and his officers were there within minutes,” said Fleming. DA spokeswoman on community safety Karen Meyer said: “He is a good person, but I feel there are more senior metro officers who could have been appointed to the position.”
