A Durban policeman who was out on bail after being arrested on allegations of stealing petrol has been rearrested this week after a police radio changed hands for R2 000.

Twenty-six-year-old Dean van Zyl – a policeman of about three years, appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday. He had been arrested on Wednesday in a sting after he allegedly sold the radio to a tow-truck driver at a service station in Westmead, Pinetown, spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker confirmed.

Naicker said police were waiting nearby after a tip-off and when Van Zyl allegedly took the money, they moved in and arrested him.

He faces charges of corruption and theft.

Van Zyl appeared in the same court on Tuesday after he had allegedly confronted the owner of panel beating shop with a gun and removed his car and the shop owner’s car from the property.

He was arrested and charged with robbery, but was released on bail.

The case was postponed until next Wednesday.
