Pretoria - The mother of a man killed in a brutal double murder in Mpumalanga wants to confront her son’s alleged killer about the motive for the attack.
The suspect was finally nabbed after committing another violent crime - he allegedly raped an 83-year-old woman last Monday - six weeks after the two bodies of his victims were discovered.
Early last month, the small town of Volksrust was shocked by the gruesome murders of Emejean Brussow and her boyfriend Dhalip Mohabir.
The couple were beaten to death - allegedly with a garden rake - and Brussow was believed to have been raped by their attacker.
“Why did he do it? I must ask him and he must tell me why he killed them,” Mohabir’s mother, Sharla Moodley, said on Wednesday.
Last Friday, police arrested the man they suspect of being responsible for the double murder after a housebreaking and the rape of the 83-year-old woman on August 12.
“Can you believe it? A 27-year-old man raping an 83-year-old woman,” said police spokesman Sergeant Sunnyboy Mathebula, who confirmed that officers had linked the suspect to the couple’s murders.
Moodley said police would not let her see the man nor give her his name when she went to the station last Friday. Mathebula also would not reveal the man’s name, but said he was a Volksrust local.
This intrigued Moodley, who wondered if the suspect was one of her son’s friends.
“Yes, I’m happy about that (his arrest),” Moodley said.
“I couldn’t eat, to think this man was out there and that he could do this to other people.”
The man appeared in the Volksrust Magistrate’s Court on Monday, but his case was postponed until November for further investigation, an appearance which Moodley won’t miss. “I’ll definitely be there, I’d like to see him,” she said.
The man has been charged with housebreaking and the rape of the elderly woman, but Mathebula said the double murder charges would be added at his next appearance.
Apart from the brutality of the attack on the couple, questions were also raised about strange discoveries at the scene. The couple’s canaries were killed and a pair of shoes, understood to not belong to either of the couple, was found.
