People must pay for what they use or else use alternative routes, says Sidwell Tshingilane.

Pretoria - There is a culture that is developing of non-payment in our communities. You see this in townships and suburbs where some ratepayers’ associations will refuse to pay for rates and taxes.

This is very wrong and our leaders must educate our people about the importance of paying rates.

The middle class made it very clear at the beginning that they won’t pay for e-tolls. The same people failed to sympathise with the people of Orlando West when they were rejecting prepaid metres and wanted to pay a fixed rate.

People must pay for what they use or else use alternative routes.

People have another option of public transport to travel around Gauteng. Huge investment went into developing these Gauteng freeways and many road users are now enjoying the roads. Many people can afford e-tolls but they are just playing pity politics.

Fuel levy proposals won’t work because people from other provinces cannot pay for Gauteng roads – that’s not fair.

We need to avoid the huge traffic congestion that is happening in cities like Lagos and countries like India.

People in Gauteng are buying cars every day and this is putting more pressure on our roads.

More traffic on our roads will lead to slow economic growth. So paying e-tolls is the right thing to do.
