Unisa lauds court ruling against Sono

Comment on this story

UNISA has welcomed the Pretoria High Court’s dismissal of an application for leave to appeal by former Unisa Council member, Professor Themba Sono.

In 2010, Sono, president of the convocation, lodged an application to have the appointment of Professor Mandla Makhanya as principal and vice-chancellor reviewed. But it was dismissed with costs in favour of the varsity.

Sono wanted to appeal against this ruling, but his application for leave to appeal has once again been dismissed with costs in favour of the university.

“The court was correct from the beginning in finding the council had followed the correct appointment procedures. We hope this matter can now be laid to rest so we can proceed unhindered with (educating) the people of this country and continent,” Unisa said. – Staff Reporter
