ss Roxanne Thangwane1 . Missed: Saturday Star Intern Roxanne Thangwane

The Editor and staff of the Saturday Star are mourning the loss of Roxanne Thangwane, an intern journalist who rose through the ranks of Independent Newspapers’ cadet school.

Thangwane, 22, who had worked at the newspaper since May, died in a car crash on the N1 highway near her home in Pretoria on Thursday.

The circumstances surrounding the accident are still unclear. She was taken to a hospital but died from her injuries shortly afterward.

Jonathan Ancer, head of the cadet school, described the young journalist as warm, kind, gentle, witty and bubbly young woman who loved writing and worked hard to improve her skills.

“Every year we go on a search to find the best and most talented young South Africans to join our cadet school. Out of a 1 000 applicants we choose just nine people we believe have potential to become great journalists. This year, Roxanne was one of those nine people.”

Ancer added that Thangwane had had a bright future.

“Tragically, her life was cut short. She also loved telling stories. The cadet group spent three intensive months together in Cape Town, and we are all heartbroken. We miss her,” he said.

The Saturday Star sent condolences to Roxanne’s family.
