Oprah’s SA mag to closeComment on this story
The South African edition of O, The Oprah Magazine, will publish its final issue in September this year, Associated Media Publishing announced last night.
The magazine was officially launched in the country in 2002.
“This was a difficult decision for us and our partners. For 12 years, the magazine has been providing readers with encouragement and inspiration to live their best lives, and we thank them for their passion and loyalty,” said Julia Raphaely, CEO of Associated Media Publishing, which publishes the magazine in partnership with Hearst Magazines International.
In a statement posted on assocmags.co.za, the company said the magazine closure would not result in job losses.
“Associated Media Publishing will work to redeploy the brand’s staff to other parts of the company where possible,” the post said.
O Magazine subscribers will receive any of the company’s other women’s titles for the duration of their subscriptions.
The company also publishes Cosmopolitan, Good housekeeping, Marie Claire, House and Leisure and WOW.
All O readers can follow Oprah.com and the Oprah Winfrey Network on the DStv channel, TLC Entertainment.
Fans have expressed their disappointment on Twitter.
Jared Orli?n tweeted: “Sad to hear that Associated Mags is closing down O Magazine in SA.”
Twanji Kalula tweeted: “O magazine is closing down – Yoh? This industry. Was bound to happen eventually without the talk show.”
?Another tweeted: “Very disappointing... Just shows how tough it is in the media trenches at the moment.”
In April the South African version of men’s magazine FHM closed its doors.
