Two areas of Diepsloot, a township north of Joburg, have safe drinking water following sewage contamination
Eighty-one percent of urban South Africans are confident the tap water they drink is safe, the Water Research Commission (WRC) said on Friday.
However, women were significantly less confident than men and had a higher tendency to boil, filter, or buy bottled water, according to the findings of a survey commissioned by the WRC.
Young people Ä between the ages of 16 and 34 Ä were more positive about the safety of tap water than older people.
Geographically, consumers in eThekwini in KwaZulu-Natal had the highest confidence, while those in Mangaung in the Free State had the least.
Consumers living in non-metro municipalities in the Northern Cape, the Eastern Cape, Free State, and Mpumalanga had the lowest confidence.
Commenting on the survey, WRC CEO Dhesigen Naidoo said its findings were important as they showed that while people were justifiably concerned about tap water quality, many people still believed it was by and large very good.
It also defined the benchmark that should be aspired to.
“We need to accelerate our efforts until this perception becomes the predominant perception in all our municipalities across the country,” Naidoo said.
The survey covered adults, aged 16 years and over, from all race and income groups, and involved a random sample of 2437 urban households. - Sapa

I drink spring water mainly.. Collected by myself from various springs I know of..fill 2 or 3, 25l HDPE containers with a tap at a time so no BPA to make me grow man boobs and get prostate cancer and no damage to the environment through land-filling my bottles. You all really think flouride is so hot? Hmm name me one non-toxic flouridated compound.. Kinda like benzene compounds in our food. What about leached birth control hormones being recycled with the water? What about all that chlorine dissolved? Everyone really think that it is all so good for them? What about unpure copper fittings, pipes and 'brass' (copper alloy) fittings, all good for you when hot acidic water flows through them dissolving the toxic metals slowly over time poisoning your family? Poly vinyl chloride piping leaching BPA and others for life? All good then?
