Builders working on a new six-storey office block at the V&A Waterfront have unearthed what appears to be an old wooden barge.
Waterfront spokeswoman Lynette Lambert described the unexpected discovery at Number One Silo in the Clock Tower precinct as an exciting find.
“We have temporarily cordoned off a section of the affected development area until a marine archaeologist has had the opportunity to assess the find.
“It will take a few days to determine what it is exactly we have unearthed or how big it is.”
Lambert said it would be examined by marine archaeologist Liesbet Schietecatte, who is part of the construction team.
“Once we have received her report, a decision will be made on the next steps.”
The 18 000m² Number One Silo complex is located between the Clock Tower shopping centre and the disused grain silo building.
It is part of the R1-billion refurbishment of the Clock Tower precinct.
Construction started in September and is scheduled to be completed in mid-2013.
Lambert added that they would continue digging for more remains today and the archaeologist would be on site to make the required assessments. - Cape Argus

Errr... my pen name Meme-Man... now I'm having to answer the "other" Meme-Man comment I didn't make at 3.46pm... you see, IOL... how silly your non-logged-in subscriber system is... Thank you for the "smart" compliment; however, I am merely informed but not necessarily smart. My 2.12pm comment wasn't meant to mock... it was intended to illustrate the absurdity of 'belief' and superstition-based thinking; and especially the tendency for belief-superstition to make a sweeping claim based on a notion, and then seek to place the onus of disproof onto the fact-based community.

Your comment was unnecessary, there's no need to mock. For someone that's really smart, that was very stupid!

It's Noah's Ark...!! An angel just appeared to me privately in a burning bush earlier today saying it was... So you need to prove to me that it isn't the Ark, and giving me scientific proof that the wood and design dates from, say, the mid 1800's won't count in my mind. Unless you can get your own apparition to appear in a burning bush and contradict my burning-bush fellow, we'll have to stop all construction and make it hallowed ground for the rest of time.

Wow that's so exciting! With any luck, we'll end up with an exhibit similar to the Chavonnes Battery. Fingers crossed!
